The industry has been abuzz with excitement since it was announced late last year that Mercedes-Benz, along with its high-performance partner AMG, is about to have a new range of more fuel efficient direct-injected and turbocharged powerplants replace its entire engine lineup.
Mercedes-Benz has revealed the official details on one of those in the range – an engine codenamed M157 – a 5.5-liter V-8 that replaces the 6.2-liter unit found in the current AMG lineup. This engine is able to develop more power and torque than the current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill due to its featured direct-injection and twin-turbocharging technologies. Continued after the jump!

The engine produces up to 544hp and 590 pound-feet of torque but when you opt for the Performance Pack, output is raised to 571hp and 664 pound-feet of torque due to additional boost pressure from the turbos.
Aside from the direct-injection and twin-turbocharging technologies, the engine has a crankcase made wholly of aluminum, four-valve per cylinders with adjustable camshafts, an intercooler, management of the generator and a stop-start feature. If these terms are new to you, it should be explained that the generator management system is the same unit from the E63.
When the engine is on the overrun or when braking, kinetic energy charges the battery instead of being wasted as heat. The load on the engine is reduced and allows for greater fuel economy. The new 5.5-liter V-8 will be seen first in the S63 AMG sedan this summer.
This car will then be able to return a fuel economy of 22.4 mpg, a 25% savings compared to the current engine. What makes it more impressive is that the big S63 AMG is able to maintain its sports car like performance. The car can accelerate from a standstill to 60mph after 4.5 seconds with the standard 544hp engine and only 4.4 seconds with the Performance Pack. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
